Where Did Diamond AI Come From?

The origins of our Diamond AI can be traced back to critical developments in the field of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). It all began with Donald Hebb in the 1940s when he proposed a groundbreaking theory of learning – the biological process of creating a memory engram. Hebb’s theory, often simplified as “Neurons that Fire Together, Wire Together,” described the strengthening of synaptic connections between neurons that fired simultaneously.

In the 1970s, our founder, David Sherwood, introduced an alternative theory, suggesting that learning occurs when neurons establish new synaptic connections with other neurons that fire together. This departure from the traditional fractional representation of synaptic strengths in ANNs became a fundamental principle of Diamond AI, where synaptic connections are binary – either existing (1) or not (0).

Years later, Mr. Sherwood delved into the intricate challenge of knowledge representation within neural networks. This quest aimed to encode vast amounts of information into an ANN while preserving crucial properties of ANNs like pattern completion when dealing with partial or distorted inputs. It was during this journey that the concept of Elastic Representations™ was born – a family of algorithms systematically designed to encode knowledge into ANNs.

These milestones in refining our understanding of neural network processes have laid the foundation for our innovative approach to developing AI technologies, setting us apart in the field.

Our Team

David Sherwood

CEO, CHIEF SCIENTIST

Cognitive Science & Solutions founder David Sherwood  has studied and modeled Artificial Neural Networks since college. He has more than 40 years of experience as a Systems Engineer in defense electronics.

He is an expert in information processing, including the disciplines of statistics, decision theory, estimation theory, communications theory, error correcting codes, digital signal processing, computer science and real-time embedded computing.

David Sherwood received a BS in Physics with a focus in Information Theory from CMU and spent several decades working as a Systems Engineer and Digital Signal Processing Engineer in Electronic Warfare. In the early 1980s, he designed the Modular Adaptive Signal Sorter (MASS) for the Army EW Command at Ft Monmouth. This small, plug-in-modular, high-performance computer was developed to protect rotary-wing aircraft from radar-guided missiles; it exhibited a revolutionary design and was extraordinarily successful. During the same time period, Mr. Sherwood pitched the use of ANNs (Hopfield-like ANNs) to the Army for the war-time reserve mode problem.

He spent the next few decades developing new inventions for Electronic Warfare (including a method to provide high-resolution in both time and frequency for EW spectrogram receivers, to identify radar pulses) while continuing to develop an advanced form of ANN technology. 1987 Mr. Sherwood was published in the First IEEE International Conference on Neural Networks. He has continued to expand and strengthen his vision of Neural Network technology ever since.
